FAQ

Q: When did you start making music?

I have been making music in some way or another since I was 13, when I first made trap beats in Reaper. I started making break based music in mid 2022. You can still listen to the first song I made in that style here.

Q: What software do you use? Do you play any instruments?

I currently use Ableton Live. I played guitar obsessively from 2019 - 2021 but I am very washed up now -- Maybe one day I will pick it up again for a song...

Q: Who are your musical influences?

healspirit1, lhk, buddywudd, gauss, 5ubaruu, bye2, I.W., j-core slicer, hkmori, igorrr, pencil, waqs, saves, demisoldier, Andy pls, dssctveself, stellabee, aphex twin, ug, shoebill, xaev, Sorry About My Face, goreshit, tektheist, watering, reizoko cj, golemm, and the flashbulb. This is actually a very concise list for me lol - there are a lot of people I surely missed.

Q: How do you do your breaks?

I made a video walking through my process here.

Q: Do you have any advice for new producers?

If you aren't on soundcloud already, get on it asap. Even as a listener it will greatly benefit you. There are entire genres like dancecore, mashcore and amenpunk that are cut off from other commercial streaming services. Make an effort to seek out and interact with the music you love. A lot of artists (myself included) often listen to the music of those who interact with us. If your work is good, you are almost assured to have a level of success on the platform. You can't say the same about anywhere else, IMO.

Most importantly, just try to make things you love. Your musical output is probably the only thing you will have full control of in your life. Don't waste that... ^^

Q: How did you get into breakcore?

I was introduced to it through the rhythm game osu! when I was 12, alongside hardcore, drum n' bass, and neurofunk. I stopped listening to it after a couple of years, and did not revisit the genre until I started producing it.

Q: How did you do [x thing in Damage]?

I made a project file breakdown of that song a while ago - see if I talk about it there!

Q: Have you played Ultrakill?

No.

Q: Where does the name "Yem" come from?

It's a little embarrassing to say, actually... There was a girl I followed on twitter 4 years ago whose handle was @saintyemmy. It separates out into "Sainty Emmy" but I misread it as Saint Yemmy. Names and phrases tend to rattle around in my head for years, so eventually I used the username "XYemmy" in an MMO I was playing (Yemmy was taken). Eventually people started calling me Yem so I changed my name to that and it stuck.

Q: Why is your name capitalized?

Because it's my name... And my music is emo enough as is lol x)

Q: I have a question not listed here. Where can I contact you?
